What is an Audience Segment?

Audience Segments allow you to group people together to control Hub content access and/or to pull reports on different user behaviours.

Audience Segments are super powerful. This means that initially, they may feel a bit tricky. Shoot us a message if you'd like some extra help with understanding and using Segments. 💪

What is an Audience Segment? What are Segments?

Audience Segments allow you to group people together based on a specific condition or quality. We create these groups - or Segments as we call them at Membership.io - to control which content someone can access inside a Hub.

Segments can be used for two main reasons:

  1. To control who sees what content in your Hub
  2. To pull reports on different user behaviours such as engagement or inactivity

Using Segments to control who sees what

Segments allow you to set a Segment as the group of people who can view and access a particular Hub section. Doing so will only allow that section to be viewed by the audience members who are a part of the Segment.

There are many different use cases for tailoring your Hub content. Some common examples are:

  • Connecting your members to content that speaks to their interests and goals

  • Multiple membership tiers that each get access to different deliverables

  • Multiple course cohorts in which each cohort has access to only the group calls they’ve attended

  • Individual coaching sessions that are available to only the specified client inside of a group coaching Hub

  • "À la carte"-style programs that allow members to gain access to one or more paths or content topics

  • Programs with some content that is accessible to everyone and some that is only accessible through additional purchases

Using Segments to pull reports

Audience Segments can be used to pull reports based on different audience behaviour. We use different Segment conditions to filter your audience list to ultimately collect different audience insights. There several types of conditions you can use to build a Segment: Personal details, Billing details, Billing status, Hubs, Hub Activity and (Audience) Tags.

  • Personal details - Allows you to segment your Audience by name, email, or date joined, including custom dates. This could be through an invite or via the Native Registration.
  • Billing details - Allows you to segment your Audience by the products and plans they've purchased through Membership.io Payments
  • Billing status - Allows you to segment your Audience by their billing status if they've purchased access to a Hub with Membership.io Payments.
  • Hubs - Segment your Audience by the Hub(s) they have access to.
  • Hub Audience - Segment your Audience based on Hub Registration Date, Content Consumption and Number of Searches.
  • Audience Tag - Segment your Audience by the Audience Tags applied to their profile.
