How to restrict or personalize who sees what Hub content

Explore the many different ways you can customize what your audience sees inside your Hub

Creating a personalized hub experience is a powerful way to engage your members with relevant content, reduce overwhelm, and increase retention. Like Netflix uses personalization to show viewers content based on their preferences, you can use Membership.io to create a customized experience that delivers the right content to the right members at the right time.

Audience Segments allow you to group specific Audience Profiles based on different conditions. These Segments help you organize and control who can see what is inside your Hub.

You can attach Segments to Hub Sections and Hub menu items. Doing so will only allow that section to be viewed by only the audience members who are a part of the Segment.

There are several different reasons why you may be looking at using Segments:

  • Deliver custom (à la carte-style) programs that allow members to access one or more digital products. In this case, you would use Audience Tags in your Segments to set this up.
  • Deliver both free and paid content inside of your Hub. Lock any paid content to your paid Segments (using Audience Tags) while keeping your free content unlocked with no Segment.
  • Host multiple tiers of the same product to deliver a tiered membership or course Hub.
  • Personalize content based on each person's preferences or goals. One of the best ways to reduce content overwhelm for your members is to tailor the content that they have access to. Set up your Hub so that each audience member is treated to a personalized Hub experience based on their inputs. We've listed the step-by-step process for creating a personalized Hub experience with Attributes here.
  • Set up one Hub to accommodate multiple cohorts of your course or coaching program. This allows you to restrict content visibility to your audience based on which cohort they are part of.

Setting up Segments to accomplish your needs

Restricting and/or personalizing your content involves three primary things:

  1. Content that you want to control access to. You can restrict access to Hub Sections or Hub Pages. Start by preparing the content you're looking to deliver and locking the Visibility to the Segment you want to grant access to. For more information on how to assign Segment visibility please see the linked article.
  2. Segments built to filter for the right group of people. You can create Segments inside the Audiences tab of your account.
  3. People inside of your Segments. Depending on what filters you're using for your Segment, you need to get people in your Segments. You can either give your members the Audience Tag or have them complete the specific onboarding question that will "unlock" your locked Segment for them.

Once you have these three things set up, your locked Sections will look something like this:Screenshot 2025-03-28 at 10.09.55 AM

NOTE: To check your work, you can impersonate audience profiles that fall into specific Segments to ensure that your tailored content is set up correctly.
