What are the differences between Contact Tags and Contact/Member Attributes?
Learn when to use Contact Tags and Contact/Member Attributes
What can I use this for?
We use Contact Tags and Contact/Member Attributes to organize and manage audience members. Both are attached to Contact Profiles and Segments.
They differ primarily on how they're applied to Profiles. The Hub creator (you!) creates and applies Contact Tags to an Audience Profile. On the other hand, the Hub creator creates the Attributes but the Hub members fill out these attributes.
Tags and Attributes also differ according to who can see them. Tags are internal, meaning only you can see them. Attributes are front-facing, meaning you and your audience can see them.
After applying both Contact Tags and Contact/Member Attributes to Contact Profiles, you can create Segments from them. By utilizing Tags or Attributes to filter and segment your members, and then applying these to a Hub Section, you can personalize the visibility of content within a private Hub.
Contact Tags
Contact Tags are similar to Content Tags and are used on Membership.io's backend to help you sort your audience members.
You can apply Contact Tags to any Profile on Membership.io. You can also use Zapier or a CSV import to apply Contact Tags.
You can apply an unlimited number of Contact Tags to an unlimited number of audience profiles and use these to control content visibility by using Contact Tags as Segment filters.
Again, Contact Tags are completely internal, which means your audience members will never know that you've added a "best-person-ever" Contact Tag to their profile. 😉
Attributes
Attributes allow you to collect and use information about your members. Attributes, unlike Tags, are filled out by your members.
Attribute information is collected during the Hub onboarding process or via the Account Settings > Profile page.
You can use information collected through Attributes to build an Audience Directory in your Hub or show your audience personalized content inside their Hub.
Attributes are visible to both you and your audience members. You can control the privacy of these Attributes, ensuring that audience members cannot view each other's personal information.
Note that members can hide their profile visibility in the Hub so that no personal information shows up when their profile is visited.
