Understand and assign Community moderators

Learn how you can add moderators to help manage your community by adding them to your list of moderators

🧰 What You Will Need

An existing Hub (Start Plan or higher)

Understand community roles and permissions

There are three types of community roles: Hub Owner, Moderator and Member.

  • The Hub Owner role refers to the Hub admin and any team member with access to your account.
  • The Moderator role refers to anyone with access to the Hub who has been granted moderation permissions by a Hub Owner. Keep reading for instructions on how to make someone a moderator.
  • The Member role refers to any audience will access to the Hub.

See our FAQ on Hub roles to see a full breakdown of what permissions are included with each of the 3 roles.

Step 1 - Confirm your Directory page is enabled

Open the Hub Editor for the Hub you want to add a moderator to.

Ensure your Member Directory is toggled on. If not, you won't be able to add a moderator. If you don't want your directory available to all your members, you can toggle on the directory temporarily to assign a moderator and then disable it once the moderator role has been granted. 👍

Step 2 - Open your Discussions page

Open your Hub community from the frontend. You will not be able to assign a moderator from your Hub editor.

From your Discussions page in the editor, hover over the arrow to copy and open your Discussions page from the frontend.

Step 3 - Assign moderator rights through your Directory

As we covered in Step 2, you must be viewing your Hub from the frontend to be able to assign a moderator.

From your Discussions page, click your Members list to open your Directory. Search for and open the profile of the person you wish to assign moderator rights to. Once inside their profile, go ahead and click the ⭐️ Make moderator button to assign them the role.

Moderator

To un-assign the moderator role, just go to the same page where you assigned the role and click Remove as moderator.

🚨 You can tell who the moderators are by the star banner next to their name.

Anyone who is a Hub owner (so anyone who is on your team) automatically has moderator-level privileges.
