What is a Segment?

Organize and personalize your members’ experience with precision

Contact/Member Segments, or simply "Segments" in Membership.io, let you group people together based on specific conditions or characteristics. These groups, called Segments, help you control content access inside your Hub and analyze member behavior through reports.

Segments are a powerful way to personalize experiences for your members. While they may feel a bit complex at first, once you understand how they work, they can make your membership strategy far more efficient and targeted. If you need help, don’t hesitate to reach out. 💪

Why use Segments?

Segments are typically used for two main purposes:

  1. Control who sees what content in your Hub.
  2. Pull reports and insights on different user behaviors (e.g., engagement, activity, billing).

Using Segments to control content access

Segments enable you to assign specific member groups to particular Hub sections. This ensures that only members in that Segment can view and access that content.

Common use cases:

  • Tailoring content based on interests or goals.
  • Tiered memberships with different deliverables per level.
  • Cohort-based programs, where each cohort only sees its group calls.
  • Private coaching sessions restricted to individual clients within a group Hub.
  • À la carte programs that grant access to specific topics or paths.
  • Hybrid programs with free + paid or general + exclusive content.

Using Segments to pull reports

Segments can also be used to analyze member behavior. By applying different segment conditions, you can filter your members and gain actionable insights—such as engagement levels, payment status, or activity trends.

Segment conditions you can use:

  • Personal Details – Name, email, or date joined (including custom dates).
  • Billing Details – Products and plans purchased through Membership.io Payments.
  • Billing Status – Active, past due, or canceled billing states.
  • Hubs – Which Hub(s) a member has access to.
  • Hub Activity – Registration date, content consumption, and number of searches.
  • Contact Tags – Tags applied to member profiles for deeper filtering.

💡PRO TIP: Combining multiple conditions provides granular control over how you deliver content and track your members. This can be especially powerful for programs with different member journeys, engagement levels, or monetization models.
